Introduction
The Art-Ecology Berlin Residency is an international programme of research, education, artistic production and cultural exchange. Over four weeks, resident artists, teachers, researchers and guests take part in practical and theoretical activities around the connections between art, ecology, territory and matter.
Programme combines studio production, technical visits, interviews, academic meetings and a hybrid seminar with talks and lectures streamed live.
Residency takes place in Berlin because the city has many working studios, institutions open to visitors, and discusses art, science and environment together.
The exchange runs both ways: residents bring the research they do in Brazil and return with what they found there.
The Five Axes

Studio production.
Each resident develops two new works on canvas, 160 × 180 cm, on themes tied to Art-Ecology, always respecting each artist’s own language, trajectory and creative autonomy.

The Art-Ecology Seminar.
Talks and lectures with guests from different fields, Monday to Friday, and longer Sunday sessions.

Visits, interviews and exchange.
Studios, universities and cultural institutions in Berlin. Residents take part in the conversations rather than just sitting in on them.

Documentation, communication and memory.
Audiovisual and written documentation of the creative process. Each resident keeps their own page on the Institute’s site.

Institutional work and legacy.
Building relationships that make future residencies, exhibitions and exchanges possible, including placing one work with a Berlin institution.
A lasting work
At the end of the residency, the Institute looks for a cultural, academic, environmental or social institution in Berlin to receive one work permanently. The work stays in the city after the group leaves, and keeps the link between the Institute and Berlin.

Selection is made by the artistic direction and considers affinity with the Institute’s research, the artist’s trajectory, and availability to stay in Berlin between 12 October and 7 November.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to go to Berlin to take part?
It depends how you take part. The residency is in person: resident artists produce in the studio, in Berlin, over the four weeks. The seminar is open and online, so you can follow the whole programme without travelling.
What language is the programme in?
The seminar is held in Portuguese. Sessions with Berlin-based guests may be in English, with support from the team. Studio guidance is in Portuguese, and we can arrange support in English for a resident who needs it.
What does it cost?
BRL 12,300 per resident. International airfare is not included.
Is there a scholarship?
Yes, two scholarships cover the residency fee.
How many places are there?
The group is ten people. Beyond the Institute’s core, two resident places and two scholarships are open.
How are resident artists chosen?
By application, with selection by the artistic direction, considering affinity with the Institute’s research, the artist’s trajectory, and availability for the period.
Do I have to work on a specific theme?
The works are in conversation with Art-Ecology, but each artist’s own language and creative autonomy are respected. The concept guides the studio conversations; it does not determine the result.
What time are the live sessions?
Monday to Friday, 2pm Berlin time, moving to 1pm from 25 October when European summer time ends. Sundays, 2pm to 6pm Berlin time, moving to 1pm to 5pm from 25 October.
Is there a certificate?
Yes, for anyone attending at least 80% of the sessions.
